Heard this this weekend and thought you might be interested in it too:

http://www.studio360.org/episodes/2009/03/06/segments/125543

Writing the Night Women

Marlon James bucks the old advice, “Write what you know.” James is obsessed with history, and his new novel "The Book of Night Women" reckons with Jamaica’s brutal past. With jaw-dropping vulgarity, it debunks “the poetry of poverty” James sees in Jamaican fiction. He tells Kurt about the challenges of depicting slavery, and how to write in the voice of a woman.

You're always able to get to the heart of the matter. That's what I love about you and this journal that you're sharing with us all. Even a story about being in a state of funk can sound inspiring and filled with love for life! That's true genius.

I struggle with this too. In reality, I think I'm quite alright, thank you ma'am. The problem with me (I think) is that I never let myself enjoy 'just being'. It's so silly.

I've participated in a prayer led by Sultan before, and it was the most moving prayer I ever performed. His message to us was simple - as you are praying, give thanks! For anything that comes to mind: for the good weather, for your good health. It was very moving, I got teary eyed.

I read through your blog posts and swear I see echoes of a young Whitman and Emerson and yes, even Rilke. Remember, they too had their doubts. It is the mark of great ones in their infancy, on the cusp of bigger and better things. Keep the faith, and don't lose hope of finding a job. You will be a HUGE success in the job world...just as you are in every other aspect of your life.
